FUNDING
The Open Research Area (ORA) funds joint research projects in the social sciences. Four national funding organisations started this programme in 2010 to strengthen international cooperation in the social sciences. These four organisations are:
- L’Agence nationale de la recherche (ANR, France)
- Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft (DFG, Germany)
- Economic and Social Research Council (ESRC, UK)
- NWO Social Sciences and Humanities (NWO-SGW, formerly NWO Social Sciences, NWO-MaGW).
WHIG was funded as part of ORA’s fifth call, which awarded a total of €17 million to social science research projects that “intend to push the boundaries of our understanding of individual and social behaviour with a view to influencing policymaking and practice. The 16 projects were selected by peer review out of 63 full proposals after a preliminary round of outline proposals”.
Country-specific institutions
NWO is committed to a strong science system in the Netherlands, in the belief that scientific research contributes to our prosperity and wellbeing.
ESRC is the UK’s largest organisation for funding research on economic and social issues. ESRC supports independent, high quality research which has an impact on business, the public sector and civil society.
The French National Research Agency (ANR) is a public administrative institution that funds project-based research carried out by public operators cooperating with each other or with private companies.
